Magnetic Island is different from the other Queensland islands. It is not just the home of a swanky island resort that is there to attract tourists. Magnetic Island is also a suburb of Townsville and has over two thousand permanent residents. The island lies close to the Queensland coast and is easily accessed from Townsville via a regular fast catamaran service and a vehicular barge. The island has a wide network of sealed roads and several towns set on idyllic bays and beaches. The topography of the island is very attractive with huge granite outcrops dominating pine tree clad slopes and ridges. Coral reef line the coastline and the bays all have beautiful beaches to enjoy. magnetic Island has been a favorite domestic holiday destination for Australian families for decades and there are many holiday homes, as well as modern apartment style resorts to choose from.

One of the most popular ways to get around on Magnetic Island and explore its beauty spots is to hire a mini moke. Open topped driving is very appealing inn the tropical surroundings and just about every mini moke that was ever sold in Australia has found its way to magnetic Island and become part of the car rental fleet here. There is a beautiful new boat harbour and marina at Magnetic Island and it is the hub of tourist activities. Both car rental and the best resort accommodation on the island is available right here. There are two beautiful resorts on the shores of the boat harbour and they are Peppers Blue on Blue resort and Mantra One Bright Point resort. Both are apartment style with in house restaurants and excellent modern self contained accommodation.

Magnetic Island

Nelly Bay is the largest town on the island and it is located on a beautiful beach on the south west corner of the island, closest to Townsville. Before the boat harbour was constructed, Nelly Bay jetty was the main access point for the island and today it provides a fantastic place for visitors to go fishing. Nelly Bay has lots of holiday accommodation plus an esplanade with shops, cafes and restaurants. Horseshoe Bay lies on the eastern side of the island facing the Coral Sea and has a beautiful anchorage that is always filled with cruising yachts and beach goers enjoying the warm tropical waters and the aquatic hire activities that are available there. There is also a stinger netted enclosure for swimming during the wet season. The esplanade is lined with apartment style accommodation, shops, cafes and restaurants and Horseshoe Bay has a wonderful holiday atmosphere.

There is plenty of activities and attractions for holiday makers while staying on Magnetic Island. The wildlife is a great drawcard and Australia's largest colony of Koala live on the island. There is a fantastic nine whole golf course that all golfers will really enjoy. It is well kept and has some truly challenging holes. Aquatic activities like kayaking, jet skiing, diving, fishing and sailing are on top of the holiday list.
