Lizard Island Resort

One of Australia's most remote, luxurious and beautiful island resorts can be found on Lizard Island. This is a large continental island that lies off the tropical north Queensland coast, north from Cooktown and it lies in the most pristine and unspoilt part of the Great Barrier Reef. In more southern locations, agricultural runoff and water pollution from large coastal towns and cities have combined to degrade sections of the reef that are close to the coast. As you go north from Cairns and Port Douglas, this effect is reduced the further north you go and this means clearer water and less damage to the corals themselves. Lizard island lies in a part of the reef that is famous for some of the best diving and fishing in Australia and the resort itself is a luxury haven from the surrounding wilderness.

Views from Lizard Island Resort

Access to Lizard Island is by air, direct from Cairns. Daily flights service the resort and international and domestic flights come to Cairns from many Australian and international destinations. The resort caters for limited numbers of guests and the accommodation is in individual bures that command fantastic views of the local bays, beaches and surrounding ocean. Relaxing around the resort itself is fantastic with many water based activities available for guests. Diving trips and fishing charters are both among the resorts most popular attractions. Not far from lizard Island are some famous dive sites. The Cod Hole is known internationally for its inquisitive Potato Cod that often swim and interact with divers. Of recent times an annual influx of inquisitive Dwarf Minke Whales have been coming to swim with divers in the Lizard Island region. The Ribbon reefs are internationally famous as both a dive and a fishing destination. Big game fishermen have been coming here for decades to fight the giant Black marlin that frequent these waters.

Watersports

Lizard Island also has a place in Australia's early history. During captain James Cook's exploration of Australia's east coast his ship "Endeavor" became trapped in the waters inside the Great Barrier Reef and the ship was unable to escape into the Coral Sea. Cook stopped at Lizard Island and climbed the highest peak of the island from which he could plot a course to safety outside the reef itself. He named the island "Lizard Island" after the many Monitor Lizards he observed on the island.

If you have been searching for a fantastic five star resort on a sunny Queensland island, for your next holiday, Lizard Island resort can provide an unrepeatable opportunity.
