Lizard Island

One of Australia's most remote, luxurious and beautiful island resorts can be found on Lizard Island. Lizard Island also has a place in Australia's early history. During captain James Cook's exploration of Australia's east coast his ship "Endeavor" became trapped in the waters inside the Great Barrier Reef and the ship was unable to escape into the Coral Sea. Cook stopped at Lizard Island and climbed the highest peak of the island from which he could plot a course to safety outside the reef itself. He named the island "Lizard Island" after the many Monitor Lizards he observed on the island.
