Lady Elliot Island
Lady Elliot Island is one of the jewels of the Great Barrier Reef. It is one of three coral cays that exist on the Great Barrier Reef that has a resort on it and Lady Elliot island is the cheapest of these to stay at. Lady Elliot Island is also the southernmost island and reef on the Great Barrier Reef. It is quite close to Brisbane and this makes it easy for many visitors to visit without having to travel further north. Water clarity at Lady Elliot is generally considered to be the best of all the popular dive locations and there are many great dive sites around the island. It is also a turtle and seabird rookery and the wildlife here is a tourist attraction in its own right. Unlike the other Queensland Islands, Lady Elliot island can only be accessed by air. There are no ferry services and regular flights arrive from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, Coolangatta airport on the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay or Bundaberg. You can come for a day trip or you can stay at the resort. Mostly, the resort provides budget accommodation. there are permanent tent cabins with hard floors or there are beachfront cabins. Standard is two and a half stars but the surroundings are five star. The reef itself is pristine and the island is beautiful. Packages that include tours of both Fraser island and Lady Elliot Island are readily available.
Lady Elliot Island is a divers paradise. There is a comprehensive dive shop and on site dive masters and instructors are on hand to lead dives and teach beginners. The island is famous for the clarity of the water and the quality of the reefs themselves. Manta rays are commonly seen and the other marine life is second to none. Nature lovers will love the millions of seabirds including some very rare species that nest here, and the hundreds of turtles of many different species that call the island home.
Lady Elliot Island is one of the easiest islands to get to and provides the best of the Great Barrier Reef.
