If you are looking for the best family holiday destination in the Queensland islands, then choose to stay at Dunk Island. Dunk island lies off the tropical north Queensland coast near the beautiful seaside town of Mission Beach which is about an hour and a half's drive south of Cairns. This entire region is a paradise of rainforests, unique wildlife, rivers, waterfalls and azure waters fringed by the Great Barrier Reef itself. The resort on Dunk Island is set deep in its own rainforest, that runs right to the beach and the gardens surrounding the resort are superb. The entire resort was badly damaged by tropical cyclone Larry in April of 2006 and has been almost totally rebuilt. The resort now is surrounded by gardens that have been fully revegitated and many of the facilities and accommodation have been fully refurbished.

Dunk Island has more activities and attractions that almost any other island resort on the Queensland coast. Water sports include sailing on windsurfers or catamarans, jet ski safaris, paddle skis, diving and snorkelling, and trips to the Great Barrier Reef. There are long, beautiful beaches with excellent swimming, horse back riding and organised sports like beach volleyball. The island has its own golf course that provides its guests with some interesting challenges. There are gymnasiums, tennis courts, squash courts, archery and several beautiful swimming pools. There are also magnificent bushwalking tracks that can take you some of the more remote locations on the island where you can enjoy the solitude and the fantastic scenery. There is no excuse for anyone to be bored on Dunk Island unless they want to be. The island has a magnificent health spa where guests can be pampered in a superb rain forest setting or you can just sit in one of the restaurants or beside the pool and enjoy a relaxing cocktail or fruit juice as you soak up the tropical ambience of this beautiful resort.

The accommodation on Dunk island is excellent. You can choose from a number of different configurations, depending on the size of your party. There are family style units set in the rainforest or you can choose beachfront luxury accommodation that practically places you on the beach itself. There is also a choice of restaurants and the main dining area is like a huge pavillion that is open at the sides and overlooks the main swimming pool, the beach and the ocean. Dunk Island has its own wharf and airstrip so it can be accessed by air from Cairns or by ferry from Mission Beach. The ferry ride is only short and departs from the Clump Point jetty. Guests staying on nearby Bedarra Island also use the Dunk Island facilities before being transferred to Bedarra by fast ferry services.
